HEATS
There were 14 races this morning, with first crew from each heat moving to the final on Thursday (with the exception of the men's pair where the top two moved forward.)
After this morning's heats, Ontario had the most crews advance directly to finals with six (lightweight men's four, men's single, women's quad, men's pair, men's quad and women's eight); B.C. had four (women's pair, women's quad, men's pair, women's eight); Saskatchewan (men's single, women's pair) advanced two crews, while Alberta (lightweight men's four), N.B. (men's pair), Newfoundland (men's pair), and Quebec (men's quad) all had one crew move forward after the heats.
There was a slight delay of the second women's eight heat due to both the B.C. and Quebec boats having lost their boats' rudders. Teams got together to speed up the repair process and races resumed. "It was great to see the provinces cooperating in the spirit of the Games," said Quebec coach Anne-Renée Thibault.
REPECHAGES
There were seven reps this afternoon, and may were exciting, close races. Here's how they shaped up:
-The lightweight men's four event - B.C., Newfoundland, Saskatchewan, and Quebec advanced.
-The men's single - Alberta, Quebec, B.C. and New Brunswick advanced.
-The women's pair - Ontario, Alberta, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador made it through to the final.
-The women's quad - Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta move to the finals lineup.
-The men's pair - Quebec and Manitoba are added to the finals' on Thursday.
-The men's quad - B.C., Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba move on.
-The women's eight - Saskatchewan, Quebec, Alberta, and Newfoundland and Labrador advanced.
Chuck McDiarmid, B.C. Coach after heats, "What's really exciting is the depth of the crews here - it's not just Ontario and B.C. dominating, but a lot of the other provinces are showing strength. The level is stepping up as each province invests more in coaching. It's great to see."
Interesting Fact: PEI has one crew rowing at the Canada Games, the men's pair of Scott Murray and Jake Byrne. It's the first time the province has entered a crew in this event and unfortunately they finished fifth this afternoon in the repechage and do not advance to the final.
Tomorrow: The finals for today's races will be held on Thursday. The next group of crews race in heats tomorrow beginning at 10:30 local time.
